The primary use of use of battery garde lithium carbonate (and lithium hydroxide) is as a precursor to lithium compounds used in lithium-ion batteries. In practice two components of the battery are made with lithium compounds: the cathode and the electrolyte.



The electrolyte is a solution of lithium hexafluorophosphate, while the cathode uses one of several lithiated structures, the most popular of which are lithium cobalt oxide and lithium iron phosphate. Battery grade Li2CO3 may be converted into lithium hydroxide before conversion to the compounds above.



The appearance of battery grade Li2CO3 is white particles, and the particle size is larger than that of high-purity Li2CO3. It often used in industrial production as battery electrolyte, catalyst, etc. Chinese companies are becoming an important "variable" in the global supply of lithium mines. In the face of the global carbon neutral goal and the TWh era, the strategic importance of lithium resources has become a global consensus, and the future competition is bound to become more intense. Li2CO3 99.5%. On the demand side, since 2021, downstream demand has accelerated, and tighter prices have pushed lithium salt prices back to their historical peaks. By the beginning of November, the quotation of battery-grade Li2CO3/lithium hydroxide bulk orders once crossed the 200,000 yuan/ton mark, which was nearly four times higher than the 50,000-60,000 yuan/ton price at the beginning of the year. GGII data shows that by 2025, the global penetration rate of new energy vehicles is expected to reach more than 20%, which will drive global power battery shipments to 1,100GWh. In the next 5 years, the compound annual growth rate of global energy storage batteries is about 72.8%, and global energy storage battery shipments are expected to reach 416GWh in 2025.



According to an estimate that 10,000 tons of Li2CO3 processing capacity can meet the demand for 15GWh batteries, 1516GWh of lithium batteries means that more than 1 million tons of Li2CO3 production capacity will be derived.



On the supply side, due to the continuous drop in lithium salt prices and the epidemic and other macroeconomic policies in the past few years, the Australian spodumene mines have been cleared and reorganized. The original planned new production capacity has been extended indefinitely, and the South American salt lake expansion plan has also been delayed and superimposed. At present, the entire lithium resource industry is in a tight supply balance, and prices continue to rise. In the future, as the gap between supply and demand widens, the evolution of market supply and prices will become more severe.
